Ankle Sprain
90% of all ankle sprains occur on the outside part of the
ankle, while only 10% occur on the inside. These sprains
are characterized by swelling and inflammation with occasional discolorization to the affected areas.
Doctor's Treatment Plan
Acute:
Treatment consists of reducing any swelling in the affected area, which is followed by a series of stretching exercises designed to rehabilitate muscles and increase strength in order to avoid future injuries.
Chronic:
The treatment is much like that above: the individual patient needs to be evaluated. In the case of chronic ankle sprains it is very important that the patient be treated, in order to restore proprioception (sense of balance) and prevent future injuries. |
